Once again, we will celebrate the traditional Winter Solstice Regatta, organized by the Mediña Nautical School. The competition begins at La Llosa in Palamós, continues towards the Formigues Islands, and finishes at the port’s breakwater, offering participants an exciting course in a unique Costa Brava setting.
This event marks the beginning of winter and has a 20-year history. It’s an open regatta for all classes and anyone passionate about the sea who wants to experience something both emotional and unique. The event is scheduled for November 23th at 12 noon, with the departure from Marina Palamós facilities.
Participation is very welcome, and considering the number of previous participants (an average of 40 boats), it promises an unforgettable moment.
But what exactly is this regatta about?
These competitions originate from ancient navigation practices celebrating the shortest day of the year: a moment for introspection and renewal. Over time, it has become a symbol of resilience and communion with the sea.
Mediterranean tradition tells us that early Phoenician navigators observed this event, believing that the solstice marked the time to give thanks to the sea for its generosity. According to tradition, competing boats sailed without instruments, guided only by the stars and the captains’ instincts, who inherited the skill of orienting themselves in the dark.
In the modern era, the regatta has taken on a more festive and social character, yet it retains the original spirit. Teams sail in light yachts or traditional sailboats, and the aim is not necessarily to win but to withstand the cold and darkness and celebrate the arrival of a new cycle together.
A unique feature is found in the celebration of this regatta in the Norwegian fjords, where boats navigate with lit torches on their bows, creating a luminous spectacle at night.
This event is made possible thanks to its sponsors, to whom we would like to extend our deepest gratitude for ensuring its continued celebration.
